This Monday we had Culture
days at our university, so I apologize if this blog post makes no sense to the
outside reader.
So I attended 12 presentations. I ran out of feedback
sheets for two of them.
For the
Irish part I visited Polar Opposites - Northern Ireland and Basque Conflict and
Irish Intelligence at its peak. I wanted to see the presentation on Irish
women, but unpredictable circumstances got in between. I was disappointed no
one seemed to have been talking about the Celts.
For
American culture I went to Same-sex marriage, American Indian boarding schools,
The Boston Tea Party (sadly did not include actual tea, nor a party), Ernest Hemingway, American gun culture,
Massacre at Virginia Tech, Flappers, The
Smurfs are real, Religion in the US education system and, my personal favorite,
American political satire.
The ones
that I would like to talk about the most on the day of my KGP are:
- -Same-sex
Marriage: Because I remember it being a very hot topic while I was in high
school so I have devoted a lot of thought to this topic.
- -The
Flappers: I liked learning about them as I always admire women who go against old
society norms.
- -Religion
in the US education system: I see a lot of talk about it on the Internet or the
American news shows, especially when it comes to Sex-ed.
- -American
gun culture: because… ‘MURICA!!! Also because there seems to be a lot going on
with the new open-carry protests in Texas.
- - American
political satire: Because I was a devoted watcher of The Daily show and the
Colbert report. (Until they made it only available for the Americans, those
bastards….)
